In a context of adaptation to the new work situation, many are wondering whether, beyond the health crisis caused by COVID-19, teleworking is here to stay. Considering that in 2019 more than 25% of sick leave was due to back pain (according to the report of the National Health System of the Ministry of Health), companies are focusing on the care of their employees, now also in their own homes. A little over a year after the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, many employees have not yet returned to the office. Some companies, such as the multinational Liberty Seguros, have already announced that they will adopt teleworking forever, while, for others, the prospects of returning to the office are indefinite.
In any case, companies are becoming aware of the need to look after the health of their employees, now from their own homes. According to a report by the World Health Organisation (WHO), 70% of the population in industrialised countries suffers from back problems at some point in their lives. The risk of this figure increasing considerably is very high if measures are not taken regarding teleworking conditions.
During the lockdown, many employees adapted a space in their home to be used as a home office, but few people have the right furniture to do their job properly. An important element to ensure physical and mental well-being, as well as to prevent injuries and ailments during teleworking, is the chair. Employees must have an ergonomic chair and it should be considered one of the main work tools for office jobs. In addition, according to a study published by the University of California, having an ergonomic office chair can increase employee productivity by up to 17%.
On average, we spend more than 9 hours a day sitting. Added to the hours of sleep, this represents more than 70% of daily inactivity. Sedentary habits carry risks such as chronic back pain. In light of this situation, the WHO published a Guide to address sedentary lifestyle caused by teleworking in 2020.
There is no doubt that employee care is essential and has become even more critical in the teleworking situation. Ergonomika was born in this context to ensure that anyone has access to an ergonomic chair suitable for the home office.
At Ergonomika we are committed to people's well-being and we want to raise awareness that the best investment is in health.
